Real men do eat plants

Eating less meat and loads more veg is your ticket to good health, say online cooking sensations Ian Theasby and Henry Firth, who share simple plant-based feasts

WHO ARE THEY? The ‘geeky’ lads Ian and Henry (above, left to right) from Sheffield met at primary school and stayed friends after growing up and moving into digital jobs. When Ian gave up meat and won Henry over to vegan cooking, their plantbased cookery career was hatched. For two tech-savvy guys it was a no-brainer to launch a cookery channel, and BOSH! TV went live on Facebook in June 2016. Being digital wizards, they wrote their new cookery book, BOSH!, entirely on Trello (, an online project management tool.

WHO’S WATCHING? The idea is to persuade veggies, flexitarians and meat eaters to eat more vegan recipes, so the food isn’t pitched exclusively to vegans. Their easy, quick recipe videos have been watched by millions, with more views per video even than Joe Wicks, Jamie Oliver or Deliciously Ella.

ARE THEY FOODIES? They’re not chefs or trained nutritionists, but keen cooks who are hungry to learn and experiment with recipes every day. Both started young – Ian’s mum taught him to make veggie lasagne, while Henry always made his family’s Mondaynight spag bol.

WHAT DO THEY COOK? Their recipes cover ‘both ends of the spectrum’, according to Henry. For their first online recipe, they turned sushi into a healthy sushi ‘cake’ stack, which is miles easier than rolling. But there are also everyday pastas and curries, as well as easier ways to make old favourites.

FAVE INGREDIENTS? Vegetables, naturally, but especially the combo of red onion and garlic, a ‘phenomenal’ base for many of their savoury dishes. They go easy on salt and use herbs, spices, garlic and citrus fruits for flavour. Unlike some other vegan cooks, they’re not obsessed with coconut oil, preferring to use it sparingly (read about coconut oil on p79). They’re big fans of carbs, especially potatoes, and do a mean potato nacho.
