A phase is over. But new things and people will come into your life to fill the gaps

Midwife Jane Outram, 58, from West Wickham, Kent, is married to Jerry, 70, a retired commercial artist. They have three children, Robert, 29, Nick, 26, and the youngest, Lily, 21, who left home two years ago.

Your youngest child leaving home is a milestone and it hit me quite hard. Lily is my only daughter and we’re very close. I really missed her when she went away to Brighton University. She got a part-time job, too, so she didn’t come home much at weekends. She’s a vegan and at first, I worried that she’d end up anaemic. But she took her diet very seriously – she’s very healthy and has become a good cook. A few months after she left, our dog Sky died at the age of 14 – for me it was a real end of an era, and I felt very down. On the spur of the moment, I bought a second-hand soft-top sports car. Jerry and I joined the National Trust, and spent most weekends driving off visiting stately homes and country parks. We all also booked more holidays together – including one to India, where we followed a route recommended to us by Lily (she’d been backpacking there in her gap year). We even stayed at some of the same hostels and went out clubbing with some of the young backpackers. It was amazing to have all that freedom. This year we’re going to do the same thing in Vietnam.
