Retreat + connect

Many of us take our social skills for granted – but sometimes we need a little extra help to boost our bonds with others. Say hello to the new breed of sociable retreats

It can seem counterintuitive to escape to a retreat in an attempt to be more social. But a growing number of destinations recognise the best route to improved wellbeing is through activities that promote bonding, social conidence and interaction. In other words, healing through being with others. It is any wonder? Studies show those having regular face-to-face conversations are less likely to report symptoms of depression, and that the better your social skills, the better your overall health. Being with others IRL also strengthens the brain, decreasing risk of cognitive decline. So next holiday, mix it up and get closer: these all give a gentle push in the right direction.

BEST FOR Introspective healing

The inspiration for many retreats comes from the sense that we need to heal our emotions to be happy. The Heart of the Earth Spa at the Four Seasons Nam Hai in Vietnam has two retreats, based on traditional Asian practices, planned for the autumn. These focus on connectivity and liberating pent-up or overwhelming emotions, to heal the body and mind. In September, the programme revolves around dynamic yoga and live music sessions in a group setting to establish better connections; November’s itinerary focuses on reiki healing to release emotional, mental and physical pain for peace and harmony. Meditation and yoga are available on site along with pampering treatments: the spa recently won an award for Best Emotional Recovery Space, and has been voted one of the world’s top spas.

About Healthy Magazine

Introducing the brand new healthy! We’ve got a fresh new look and have spruced up our content, including challenging new franchises, a dedicated vegan section and inspiring real life stories. Our central theme this issue is mental wellbeing – a challenge that doesn’t seem to be getting any easier, even as we are getting better at talking about it. Hopefully our ‘safe space’ is just that – somewhere you can explore and develop your own mental health. We’ve also investigated the gender disparity in football, explored the growing (though illegal) trend of microdosing, and chatted to chef turned wellness advocate Lorraine Pascale about her own mental wellbeing journey. Plus, we’ve brought in an expert panel to review all our content, ensuring you’re getting the very best and latest health, fitness, food, beauty and wellness advice.
