IN SEASON… peas

Often overlooked as simply a side, peas are rich in vitamins and packed with protein. So this summer, give peas a chance

One of the oldest cultivated crops and a favourite of fussy kids, peas are probably a staple in your freezer. And now is the time to opt for fresh – be that from a greengrocer or your own garden (peas are very easy to grow). Cheap and versatile, their sweet flavour and pleasing pop make peas the ultimate summer veg. But don’t take our word for it – peas have an impressive nutritional profile. Actually seeds from the legume family, peas are a starchy vegetable thanks to their complex carb content. They’re low in calories and contain just about every vitamin and mineral you need. Peas are one of the best plant-based protein sources, which together with a high fibre content, helps to slow digestion and promote a feeling of fullness. Despite being sweet, peas support healthy blood sugar thanks to a low glycaemic index, and are rich in vitamin K, which may protect against cancer.

About Healthy Magazine

Introducing the brand new healthy! We’ve got a fresh new look and have spruced up our content, including challenging new franchises, a dedicated vegan section and inspiring real life stories. Our central theme this issue is mental wellbeing – a challenge that doesn’t seem to be getting any easier, even as we are getting better at talking about it. Hopefully our ‘safe space’ is just that – somewhere you can explore and develop your own mental health. We’ve also investigated the gender disparity in football, explored the growing (though illegal) trend of microdosing, and chatted to chef turned wellness advocate Lorraine Pascale about her own mental wellbeing journey. Plus, we’ve brought in an expert panel to review all our content, ensuring you’re getting the very best and latest health, fitness, food, beauty and wellness advice.
