Rover comes with more health and wellbeing benefits than previously thought. He’s not just good for running around playing throw and fetch with – 83 per cent of pet-owning parents believed Rover and pals helped with child development, and it turns out they’re right. ‘Pets represent security, and can help children open up about worries in times of emotional upheaval, like parental divorce or illness – and many children confide in their pets more than siblings,’ says psychologist Dr Deborah Wells. ‘They also help them learn about life and death and about sharing and caring for others.
