Thought to have originated in Africa, the first recorded watermelon harvest took place some 5,000 years ago in Egypt. Paintings of the fruit were found on the walls of ancient buildings. Watermelons then spread to other countries via merchant ships and have been held in high esteem ever since. In fact, in 2007, watermelon was named the official vegetable of the US state of Oklahoma – yes, you read that right, they declared it a vegetable. But how can something made up of 92 per cent water be good for anything other than hydration?
