Should I try it?
Emotional Freedom Technique, or Tapping, has its roots in Eastern medicine. Like acupuncture, but without the needles, the idea is that you stimulate the body’s energy meridian points by tapping on them with your fingertips. In the 1980s, psychologist Roger Callahan was treating a patient with an extreme phobia of water, which manifested as stomach pains. Dr Callahan, who had studied traditional Chinese medicines, told his patient to tap the acupuncture point associated with the stomach meridian, on her cheekbone. The story goes that she did, and her stomach pains disappeared as well as her phobia. Since then, Dr Callahan has developed and refined the technique, and his colleague Gary Craig went on to work on it further still, to bring about today’s EFT, a specific sequence of taps.
