Whether steam or diesel, powering a textile mill or a locomotive, historic engines bring our past powering into the present. Our round-up of engine-themed events will allow you to immerse yourself in Scotland’s industrial heritage

The star object of the High Mill at Verdant Works in Dundee is an 1801- 02 Boulton & Watt steam engine, originally used to drive the machinery at Douglasfield Bleach Field. See the engine run on most days during the visitor season (volunteer dependent), check the website for dates: scot.sh/hswatt The steam fleet at Summerlee Museum of Scottish Industrial Life in Coatbridge is out and in steam with a number of visiting miniature steam engines on 11 August. Visitors can enjoy arts & crafts, music, mine tours, tram rides and museum exhibitions. Website: culturenl.co.uk/summerleeGlamis Castle in Angus hosts the annual Scottish Transport Extravaganza, 7-8 July, which welcomes a huge range of motor vehicles of the last 100 years, as well as crafts, antiques and an auto-jumble. Details at: www.svvc.co.uk Steam Sundays run throughout July and August on the Caledonian Railway, departing from Brechin Station. Enjoy a leisurely trip along the four-mile branch line, taking in the Angus countryside, with the option to extend your visit by visiting House of Dun. Dates at: www.caledonianrailway.com/steamsunday.php See visiting vintage buses, and many which are usually kept in storage, at the Scottish Vintage Bus Museum’s annual open weekend on 18-19 August. A free bus service runs to and from Dunfermline town centre throughout the event. Website: www.svbm.online
