Can I convert my loft space?

If you can’t build out, build up, says Hayley Gilbert – and add 15% to your home’s value

Having bought a new house 18 months ago, I was sure that two double bedrooms and a single would be all the space I needed, but when you work from home every inch counts! Just when I thought my only option was to move, I had an epiphany – I could convert my loft. It looked like a vast, empty space up there as I balanced precariously on top of a ladder, and I had no idea how to go about it, what it would cost or whether, legally speaking, I would be able to do it anyway. But fellow loft-converters, don’t worry yourselves. Here I have compiled a guide to sussing out if it’s the right choice for you, and all the steps you’ll need to take. Oh, and you could boost your home’s value by up to 15% too.

About Homestyle

I always feel incredibly lucky that it’s part of my job to go around the country visiting beautiful homes to shoot for the magazine, and this month was particularly special. I was so inspired by the home of Gigi Eligoloff (this month’s cover girl, see page 16). She has filled her small London home almost entirely from lost and second-hand treasures, yet the result is a relaxed and surprisingly sophisticated style that can’t help but make you smile. She really ticked the HomeStyle box when we discovered she had bought her entire kitchen on Gumtree for £900! Another showstopper this issue is the upcycling feature – turn to page 85 right now for the most stunning cupboard revamp. It’s proof that breathing life back into things other people don’t want can create items that will be treasured for generations to come. And if you’re about to embark on your own makeover, don’t miss our top trend hot list on page 74 – with these ideas, you won’t just be one small step ahead of the crowds, you’ll be one huge HomeStyle leap!
