Pre-loved items bring their own history

Ashley McDow was determined that her new London home would stand out with creativity, vibrant colours and recycled finds
‘The wooden plaque on the wall is from a mosque in Saudi Arabia that my dad salvaged years ago when it was being bulldozed. The wall shelves are made from old scaffolding boards’

Good idea

Old scaffolding boards make great rusticlooking shelves

Sitting room

‘The sitting room reflects my passion for colour and recycling. The dining table was salvaged from a pub. It had been left to rot in a property I’d rented, so I sanded and varnished the wood top and it was fine! The metal chairs came from my Texan grandad’s pharmacy. I reupholstered them in old Thai silk designs I’d done for Duchamp. The designs are different on each chair, but tone in with one another. I’m about to repaint the metal legs again.’

Welcome to my home

A bit about me

About Homestyle

The sun is shining, the weather is sweet, makes you want to... Decorate every room in the house! (Whilst moving our dancing feet, obviously.) Summer gives us all a fresh burst of energy, so we’ve packed this entire issue with ways to bring in the brightness, whether that’s emulating Nova William’s colour-pop interiors on page 14 (check out the Nova-inspired neon accessories on page 22, too) or de-cluttering from top to bottom, just like Claire Stewart (p.50). And for a 1950s burst of kaleidoscopic cool, flip to page 100 for a beach hut makeover like no other. Got the holiday blues? Hang on to that sunshine feeling with our round-up of the biggest Global trends from three vibrant countries: Brazil, France and Morocco. It also doubles-up as fab Olympic party prep – you’ll find loads of savvy buys for getting the Rio 2016 look. Besides the bold and beautiful interior eye candy, we’ve been digging into what makes our homes healthier places to live. From chemical-free plastics and low-VOC paints and dust-free flooring, HomeStyle’s Abbi has found the best ways to live naturally. And if you’ve spent all your pocket money on ice creams and piña coladas, don’t worry – there are six budget-friendly upcycling projects on page 76 to get stuck into, plus incredible prizes to win on pages 59, 122 and 123. We’ve got our fingers crossed for you.
