July 20, 1969, ah yes, we remember it well. It was the day that mankind took one Giant Leap. But hang on a minute. If Neil Armstrong was the first man on the moon, then who was filming him go down the ladder? Okay, so they say a camera had actually been mounted to the side of the lunar module, but we all know it was really Stanley Kubrick handling that camera. NASA asked Stan to fake the whole thing but as everyone now knows he was such a perfectionist that he insisted on filming on location anyway.
Why do we mention this? Well next time round we’ll be bringing you a great feature on how another director, Peter Hyams, faked the first Mars landing in a studio for Capricorn One, the thrilling 1979 action thriller that is surely ripe for re-evaluation in an age where conspiracy theories are as common as Downing Street parties, er, gatherings.
Also coming your way is a fun feature on the action and sci-fi shows that took over the Saturday teatime schedules in the late-70s and early 80s, including the likes of Battlestar Galactica, Buck Rogers in the 25th Century and T.J. Hooker. If you remember these we promise not to piss on your CHiPS.
But you know what? Back in those carefree days, little did we realise that by the year 2022, the cumulative effects of overpopulation, pollution and a climate catastrophe would cause severe worldwide shortages of food, water and housing. Oh well, enough about real life, just settle back and cheer yourself up by reading all about Soylent Green, the 1973 Chuck Heston film which we have decided to “Make Room… Make Room” for a feature on. See what we did there? We might even be able to give away a free bar of Soylent Green on the cover. No promises, mind, people.
