With Scottish rugby doing pretty well at the moment, and Scottish football not so much, how about this… Scottish football has a direct connection with possibly the world’s most famous team? A connection that highlights yet again the role Scots have played worldwide through innovative, entrepreneurial and benevolent activities. I’m talking about FC Barcelona, of course.
We Scots have been playing football since as far back as 1424, although the game then bore more resemblance to Australian Rules Football, being very brutal and allowing handling of the ball. Indeed King James I banned it (Futeball) in favour of archery, as the game often resulted in ‘broken banis’ and ‘stryfe discorde’.
