In October 2017, the BBC’s national news gave a great deal of coverage to the 30th anniversary of the ‘Great Storm’ of 1987 which had devastated the South of England. January 2018 sees the 50th anniversary of a greater storm that cost more lives, destroyed more buildings and saw even more powerful winds. However, as Hurricane Low Q only afflicted Northern Ireland, Scotland, the Isle of Man and Northern England, I’m not expecting Londonbased broadcasters to make as much of a fuss. Yet the storm, which caused particular distress and havoc in and around Glasgow, has been described as Scotland’s greatest natural disaster.
