As an Englishman who moved to Scotland in 1998 I must admit I was a bit slow on the uptake, but I was to make the same journey as many have made, from instinctive antipathy to ‘nationalism’ to passionate and conscious support for Scottish Independence. By 2013 I wanted to do something about it, and I went with my wife Irene, who also sees Independence as the only way for Scotland to become a fairer society, to a local Yes meeting.
There was a lot of talk about chapping doors and campaigning, but I couldn’t envisage myself doing this because I knew I was more likely to lose the rag than convert anyone to The Cause. It was Irene who suggested I do something more in line with my own skills: I play Border pipes, and I’d just been playing Sic a Paircel o Rogues in a Nation when she asked me “Why don’t you play something more positive!?”
