AS I WRITE this article two privileged, wealthy, deeply unattractive, middle-aged white men are vying to be the next Prime Minister of the UK, a decision in which 99.7% of the electorate will have no say. But either way, no mater who succeeds, the consequences for the NHS (and those who depend on it for their healthcare) could be catastrophic.

In 2005 one of the candidates, Jeremy Hunt, co-authored a paper which called for the NHS to be replaced by an insurance system “in effect denationalising the provision of healthcare in Britain”.
