IN SCOTLAND, long ago, most places didn’t have names. People had to talk about ‘the street round the corner’, ‘that high pointy hill’, ‘the big town with the clock tower thing’ or just ‘up there’. Finally, a wise King of Scotland decided enough was enough. Places ought to have names. People in every village and town and city were told to go out and name things.
In the village of Dollar, people were quite lucky – their village already had a name, but now they had to think about naming all the hills and burns and glens and farms and streets round about them. A committee of leading villagers was formed and they divided the area into sections and sent someone to each section to name everything there.
