A Bitter Pill

At the start of the third series of US drama The Wire drug king Avon Barksdale is locked up in prison and his ‘business’ partner, ‘Stringer’ Bell, has become the leader of what remains of their gang. But ‘Stringer’ has been to night classes at business school and sees his role now as more chief executive and chairman of the board. He has come to realise that there are vast profits to be made from selling drugs to people at hugely inflated prices because they need or want them, even when the benefits to those users are marginal and the potential side effects are severe. ‘Stringer’ realises that the profits he can make can turn him from a gangster in the street to a businessman in a penthouse.

But ‘Stringer’ is no business guru -that vast profits are there to be made from selling medicine at vastly inflated prices has been known to the legitimate pharmaceutical industry for more than a century.
