An American Perspective
By Will McLeod, New York
IMAGINE the warped view of Scotland that many Americans have today, thanks to what we’re told by the British media. I have seen articles predicting that the troubles would return to Scotland - from a Journalist that doesn’t know the difference between Glasgow and Belfast. I have seen articles talking about Scottish nationalism in the same vein as Brexit politics or Trump-esque American nationalism. I’ve seen articles that seriously argue that there’s no industry in Scotland other than the oil industry, as if the central belt or western half of the country doesn’t exist.

I knock down those viewpoints regularly. What Americans who bother to take an interest in the rest of the world see, is instability. My main argument is that instability will exist within the British Union until the Scottish question is finally settled. That the independence movement is powerful, gigantic, and will never stop until they’ve achieved their goals.
