A Load of Tosh (Very Special)

Tom Morton on the problems of finding good whisky at reasonable prices.

THE PROBLEM with really good whisky is that I can’t afford it. Even the excellent Master of Malt online shop, with its ‘Drinks by the Dram’ service by which you can buy a 3cl sample of many whiskies, leaves you staggered at the notion of paying £45 for a single, tiny taste of 25-year-old Macallan. A whole bottle will cost £695.

A lot of these bank-account-emptying examples of the cratur are being bought not by convivial drinkers but by hoarders and collectors. There is now a thriving market for rare whiskies and it is, like that for extremely expensive French wine, wide open to the possibility of fraud. I mean, if you have a bottle of whisky worth, say, £21,600 (Macallan again, this time a 1952) you are only going to open it - unless you’re loaded to the extent of a Love Productions director waiting for the Bake-Off cheque from Channel 4 - if the End of the World is not just announced, but a guaranteed 24 hours away.
