A BIG Idea

Basic Income Guarantee payment

SOME people call it ‘free money’. Others refer to it as ‘an end to poverty’. The idea of a guaranteed ‘basic income’ for every citizen – replacing all benefits – is one that has hit the headlines over the past year or so.

So, what is it? Who might get it? And how much? Countries around the world are currently looking at introducing such a basic income for their citizens – and, here in Scotland, global opinion and reaction is being monitored carefully. In essence, the ‘basic income’ would give every resident a monthly payment from the government, regardless of whether they are working or not, but would replace all other forms of benefit. The idea is to create opportunity – encouraging people into full or part-time work without the threat of losing benefits (removing the ‘welfare trap’), and giving payments ‘per person’ as opposed to ‘per household’ (encouraging families to stay together, rather than rewarding them for breaking up).
