Lunch at the Palazzo

It’s his first time in the bistro and he’s not impressed. The Venetian Lagoon on the mural is cracked and faded, and Vesuvius is never going to erupt again on that grimy wall. The once-cheerful tablecloths have been washed a hundred times too often, and the menu wilts in his hand.

He’s surprised that Sam Deasey would choose this place for their meeting. Then he looks around at the empty tables and has his answer.

The shabby black shoes of the waiter catch his eye, and he follows their shuffle around the room. The old man’s feet must be bad. He glances down at his own polished Barkers. At least he still has some decent footwear. He watches the waiter to avoid watching the door. He can’t afford to look anxious.

A couple come in and sit near Anthony. The waiter, his body an obsequious question mark, leans in to take their order and a lock of grey hair falls on to his brow. He brushes it aside wearily with the back of his hand, and Anthony sees his own father. In the end he was exhausted too.
