An Iscot Short Story

Sometimes I get the days mixed up, because I make this journey so often. Every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday, I visit Caroline.

A stout woman with untidy hair flops into the seat opposite mine. She smiles, then turns down the corners of her mouth in an expression which asks me to agree that she’s made it just in time.

As the train eases out of the station I award her a half-smile in return, then open my book.

Over time I have begun to recognise some of the other passengers. Even so, I don’t speak to any of them. Nor will I strike up a conversation with this woman. After all, how could I tell them that I am going to visit my daughter in a mental hospital?

Three times a week for almost five months. Two and a half hours there and two and a half hours back. Fifteen hours, plus three one hour visits.
