Yorkshire-based Marguerite Templeton owns a one-bedroom apartment on the southwestern shore of Lake Garda. She and her daughter Suzanne spend most of the school holidays there in the summer and at Easter and Christmas. Friends of the family make use of it at other times of the year.
What drew Marguerite to Lombardy? “I worked in Milan for a few years in my twenties,” she explains. “I had never been to Italy before then and of course it was all terribly exciting. At the weekends I used to head out of the city and explore greener spaces, which was when I discovered – and fell completely in love with – Italy’s lakes. Six years ago, I was in a position to buy a small property abroad. I knew that there was lots for kids to do around Lake Garda, and I thought it would be lovely for Suzanne to grow up with one foot in a different country, so it was the obvious first choice for me.
