LUNCH AT SANTA MARIA DI LEUCA
Santa Maria di Leuca sits at the most southern point of Puglia with two promontories, Punta Ristola and Punta Meliso, jutting out into the sea. Along the promenade are villas built in various styles, each with a bagnarola on the shore – stone or wooden bathing huts creating a spa or pool just for one, for ladies to be able to bathe in private.
Lunch in Santa Maria di Leuca included a pie-like dish. When the bread lid was opened it was baby octopus and gnocchi in a delicious sauce, to be eaten with pieces of the bread to soak up the sauce. This is called scarpetta, when you use bread to mop up the sauce.
