Jaguar World  |  XKR at the limit
At a loose end the other day, I began making a list of my dream garage, ten cars I'd like to own no matter their cost. As well as a D-type, early XJS, Ferrari Dino and Porsche 911 I have to concede my own 2005 S-TYPE 2.7 diesel was also on the list. It's not that I have little imagination (the Renault 4 also on there hopefully proves that) but rather I just simply like my car. It’s fast, looks good, is very comfortable and always enjoyable to drive. It takes me all over the UK for work and
pleasure, tows my caravan and collects the kids from school. So far, of course, I could be talking about any Jaguar saloon from an an XJ6 S1 to X308. Yet mine – and many like it – differs from its
earlier siblings by its excellent economy. With Jaguar now well established in the diesel executive market, we take it for granted that its modern models will run and run before requiring a refill. Yet ten years ago when Jaguar unveiled its first diesel-powered model – the X-TYPE 2.0d – it was a new, but much needed, idea. As our feature on the first generation of Jaguar diesel cars (p30)
shows, these more economical models helped to change the face of Jaguar, making it more relevant
for ordinary people. Without that glorious yet frugal engine I doubt I’d be able to justify my Jaguar ownership. I’m sure I’m all of you diesel owners reading this probably feel the same. So my S-TYPE might not have the allure or the prestige of an early XJS (yet), but I can genuinely afford to drive it regulary. And surely, that’s what really matters?
