The right soil conditions are everything with carrots

Soil is everything when it comes to growing any veg crop, but with carrots it is even more important to get the conditions right if you want those long straight roots. Exhibition growers certainly know this and few grow their treasured crop directly into the soil, opting instead to make their own fine mixes in raised beds or barrels. Most of us, of course, have to make do with the soil we have, and while we may not be able to grow arrow straight and perfect roots every time, we can maximise our chances of growing a good crop by following a few simple steps.

GETTING IT RIGHT

So what conditions do you need to provide your carrots with for the best crops? Start by choosing a sunny, sheltered spot if possible. Early sowings simply won’t germinate well if the soil is cold, so covering with cloches to help warm it in spring can be useful, or alternatively just delay your sowings until conditions improve. The soil should be about 7C (45F) before any sowing should be attempted and the cloches can be kept in place after sowing if conditions are poor.
