HINTS FOR HAPPY HARVESTING

Though you might be tempted to do smash and grab when it comes to harvesting, a little care is key, says Joyce Russell Pictures: Ben Russell

There is always something to harvest in a productive kitchen garden and September seems to push the gardener into harvesting overdrive. There can be a temptation to grab and tug at speed, in order to ill baskets in a short space of time.

This may mean fast results for the kitchen but it can also lead to damaged stems or broken roots and it may harm the future potential of plants.

“Learn the right harvesting technique for each crop and you will get the best and the most from each plant”

It can often be quicker to fetch a fork to lift carrots than to dig ingers into soil in an attempt to pull out a stubborn root, and why not carry a cutting tool to slice through a caulilower stem rather than hurt your back trying to pull up the whole thing?

Learn the right harvesting technique for each crop and you will get the best and the most from each plant. After all, those home-grown beauties deserve to be harvested with care and appreciated at their best.
