Mike Hedges, organic gardening expert and MD of The Organic Gardening Catalogue, explores the options available for protecting your crops from a range of garden pests

Copper bands create a barrier around susceptible plants, repelling them with a natural mild electrical charge. The ends of each band clip together to form a ring, and multiple bands can be used to protect larger areas. Unlike adhesive tapes, copper bands can be moved around the garden, they are reuseable and can be cleaned and stored when not in use. Copper rings come in a range of sizes to allow you to protect young seedlings and more established plants.

Using traps, repellents, deterrents, predators, crop covers, nets and cages to stay one step ahead is an essential part of organic gardening to prevent crops succumbing to pest attacks. Here we focus on a variety of traps and barriers available to buy that are completely safe in an organic environment.
