Apparently one of the gardening trends this year is based on the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi. It isn’t an easy concept to get your head around and not as simple as often described in the West: the acceptance of the transient nature of life, including death and decay. Loosely, it is all about allowing and even finding beauty in imperfection and the impermanence of life. To be honest, even if there is more to it than that just this idea in itself is a refreshing way of looking at things. Our society norm is hell bent on reaching perfection and getting things so right all the time. We strive continuously to buy perfect new things but in wabi-sabi you can’t buy beauty. That imperfect pot with a crack in it is still beautiful; in fact all the more for it. And you were probably thinking of throwing it out and buying a shiny new perfect one.
