Ditch the sugar, saysSusie Kearleywith her selection of super smoothies made from fresh home-grown produce

Sugar. It’s had a lot of bad press recently, hasn’t it? So in response to rising levels of obesity, advice from medical experts, and lobbying from health campaigners, the Government will introduce a sugar tax on soft drinks from 2018. The body turns carbohydrates into glucose for energy, so dietary sugar is not essential.

NHS guidelines say: “Adults are advised not to eat more than 30g of free sugars a day, which is roughly seven sugar cubes.” However, getting your energy from fresh fruits and vegetables is much healthier than getting it from processed foods and beverages with added sugar.

I made some tasty alternatives to sugary soft drinks by blending smoothies from home-grown and fresh produce. If you want to make your own, you’ll need an electric blender or smoothie maker.
