Matt Munro’s image of the Ghan (p84)
In the middle of the day, the Australian outback looks hazy and stark, but during sunrise and sunset it’s like a different place. The air is incredibly clean and humidity-free, which makes the red of the earth appear all the more intense. I already knew that taking photographs aboard a moving train would be a real challenge: you have no control over your timing or your positioning. On the Ghan it’s harder still: you seldom see the whole train because the route is so straight. Luckily we approached a corner just as the morning sun burst through the clouds on our approach to Alice Springs. I took this shot leaning as far as I could out of the window (there’s no danger of hitting your head in the outback!).
