Ashmolean Museum

Britain's oldest public museum, founded in 1683, is a fine example of Neoclassical architecture. Four floors of bright, spacious galleries display treasures including Egyptian mummies, Indian textiles, Islamic art, rare porcelain, priceless musical instruments and the Anglo-Saxon Alfred Jewel.

The Bodleian is one of the world's oldest public libraries. Visitors can look around the Jacobean Gothic Old Schools Quadrangle for free. For £1 you can visit the exquisite, fan-vaulted Divinity School, which featured as the Hogwarts hospital wing in the Harry Potter films. Guided tours take in other parts of the complex, including the interior of the beautiful Radcliffe Camera reading room. Advance tickets are available for extended tours only; others must be purchased on the day.
