WIERZYNEK
THE MEDIEVAL ONE
‘Champagne?’ asks Wierzynek’s manager Arkadiusz Kożuch, before slicing the bottle’s top off with a sabre. A group of smartly dressed friends down flutes to applaud his unconventional decorking technique, which is somehow entirely in keeping with the surroundings.
The restaurant’s windows open onto Kraków’s medieval town square, and Wierzynek’s interior pays homage to its 14th-century origins, when a sword at the belt wouldn’t have raised an eyebrow. Its four floors are stocked with golden candelabras and antique furniture, walls exquisitely decorated with frescoes or cordovan leather. Tables filled with diners sharing bottles of wine are mirrored in oil paintings depicting guests similarly engaged, paying homage to the event that is the venue’s chief claim to fame.
