Tribal encounters on Vanuatu and more images from around the world

Rock of ages

The Sky Rock Petroglyphs were created thousands of years ago by ancestors of the local Paiute-Shoshone tribe – the markings were formed by etching away the darker top layer of rock

I’ve always been intrigued by ancient artworks and ruins. Seeing them, I feel I’ve been catapulted back hundreds or thousands of years. During this trip to the Eastern Sierras, I visited this set of petroglyphs, framed by a backdrop of the Sierra Mountains. This was my fifth outing to this location, but I never get tired of seeing such a masterpiece, and have always wondered what message the ancients were trying to impart. This particular sunrise gave me one of the most spectacular displays of colour, with the entire sky lit up in burning pinks and reds. With the artwork, snow-covered peaks and the phenomenal sunrise, I felt like I was in heaven.
