A golden wonder

Summer always heralds a stampede for the beaches of the Algarve, but it’s little known that some of Portugal’s most perfect and overlooked shores sit right under the nose of the capital. Though barely 30 miles south of Lisbon, Comporta beach is a universe away from the urban clamour: it is set on a long spit of sand with the bluest seas on one side, and the wetlands and meandering channels of the Sado estuary on the other. Go now to idle in the many beach shacks that specialise in fresh seafood, served on dining tables that catch the spray from breaking Atlantic waves.
