Having been hammered by The Beatles in the 1967 Psychedelic Joust Of Long Playing Panjandrums, following Their Satanic Majesties Request could have finished less resolute talents than The Rolling Stones. Sadly, the aftermath did seem to defeat Brian Jones, who definitively relinquished control of his band to Jagger and Richards over the course of 1968. If Jones is largely absent from Beggars Banquet, what he did contribute would prove to be a beautiful finale, especially his elegant slide guitar on No Expectations. It’s tragic that Jones didn’t survive to add to what became the Stones’ golden run of records, but at least he helped kickstart it with their first truly golden album.
