Black Friday is a recent retail phenomenon that is increasingly positioning itself at the front of the collective mind of UK shoppers. Originally a US tradition, the event always falls on the Friday after Thanksgiving; which means this year it takes place on 29 November. The deals on offer in the past have been dominated by consumer electronics, but since 2010 Record Store Day has also got in on the action – with a distinct twist.
Record Store Day Co-ordinator Megan Page explains: “In 2010, the organisers of RSD introduced RSD Black Friday; a sister event to April’s main celebrations. Albeit, RSD Black Friday, but not Black Friday as you know it. RSD have worked to shift the perceived culture of the mass-produced, low as you can go event to instead offer music fans the chance to get a selection of exclusive and special releases ahead of Christmas!
