There are times when things fall into place. Not so long ago, Sudan Archives was thinking of quitting her job making doughnuts and going out as a busker. Thankfully, risking penury didn’t prove necessary. Instead, her unique music, built around beats, violin and Sudan’s acutely observed songwriting, started to gain traction. Life began to move fast.
“When I got a booking agent, the first thing they booked me on was Coachella,” she says, “so it just seemed like everything was cranked to the max in the snap of a finger.” Her appearance at the California festival was in 2018 and things have barely slowed since. Following two acclaimed EPs – Sudan Archives (2017) and Sink (2018) – Sudan’s debut album, Athena, is released in November.
