Double-groove records can play two tracks on the same section of the same side of vinyl. The pressing plant – at least the 80s-era, gimmickfixated plant – achieved this by pressing an extra, concentric groove with a different song alongside the original groove playing the main attraction.
How can you choose which of the two tracks to play back? The answer is: you can’t. You just drop the needle and discover which song comes on purely by chance. And while The Blow Monkeys’ Wicked Ways was my first double-groove release, it seems this was far from the first record of its kind.
