For he's an Olly good fellow

For he's an Olly good fellow

Posted January 23, 2015   |   1776 views   |   Men's Interest   |   Comments (0) One of the most successful solo artists to have ever emerged from a tv talent show, olly murs releases his fourth album this month and you could say he’s feeling pretty good about it...

Hauling his award-winning derrière onto the bonnet of a Chevrolet pickup like a spunky 1920s Playboy Bunny, Olly Murs flicks between a resting smirk and a smoulder in a way that seems to come very naturally now. Hats off to the lad, he might be the UK’s pre-eminent ambassador for a pork-pie headpiece and some retro braces but he’s not even a little bit out of his comfort-zone with a strong wind blowing through his barnet and a little less to hold his trousers up on a drizzly day in Greenwich. The Essex posterboy is about to release his fourth studio album, Never Been Better , a feat that certainly lives up to its title, even in relation to his already widely successful back-catalogue of chart-topping singles and multi-platinum certifications. And you can tell just by watching him on set – tooting the horn of his new toy with a mischievous childlike grin on his face – that never better isn’t just a musical sentiment, but one that reflects Olly’s current psyche too. I chat to the industry’s cheekiest chap about being high on life, shaking off his haters and his top tips for a flattering naked selfie.
In what sense have you never been better?
I do think it’s a bit musically, but it’s more a personal thing. It’s been an amazing five years for me and the last eight months was a time to reflect on everything and let it all sink in. It’s been ridiculous really, what I’ve been able to do since The X Factor. Never Been Better was kind of me looking at my life and saying “you know what, I don’t think my life is ever going to be better than this.”

Do you feel like this is your peak though? The next album could be called ‘Meh, Could be Better’...
Nah not at all. You know what, if it is my peak on this album I’d be more than happy. I think it’s the best music I’ve done so far. It’s a bold title, sure, but you’ve got to have the music to back it up. When I get round to the next album after this one it’ll be a different place, a different time, a different moment. We’ll see what happens. To be honest I’ve not even had time to think about that.

One of the lyrics on the title track is “I’m still chasing the crown” – do you still think there’s a way to go?
Well that lyric was a slight reference to Robbie [Williams]. People are always comparing us and saying I’m the next Robbie, and he’s always telling me he’s got the crown. It’s my way of saying I’m still working at it and I’m still believing in myself. I’d rather be chasing than know that I’ve succeeded. If I’m chasing something I’m more determined and ambitious. I still want to be the top of what I’m doing. I’ll probably never get there but to have that dream keeps me going.

Another lyric from that song is “the world can’t knock me down” – would you say you’ve had to overcome a lot of obstacles to get to where you are now?Listen, I don’t think I’ve had as many ups and downs as a lot of artists out there, but I do think there’s a level of me being begrudged by some people. There have been a lot of digs, mainly because I came from The X Factor . I’m a really nice guy I think and I get on with people, so it’s not nice to hear people being negative about you. But in this industry, if you’re from something like The X Factor or a reality TV show, you’re almost like a bad smell. So that lyric is kind of aimed at all the haters and all the negative people. I’m a positive person, I love life, I love what I’m doing – as I’m sure all successful artists feel about their jobs. I don’t know, maybe they don’t – that’s probably why they hate everyone that does. It was just my way of saying no matter what people say about me in the press or on YouTube or Twitter or Instagram, I can rise above it and I’m not really interested
