LAKE BAIKAL

Every winter, Lake Baikal, Siberia, freezes. Not just a thin covering, but 1.5 metres of thick ice that the locals drive over. It’s as close as you can get to Antarctica without going south.

In March 2019, Majell Backhausen and I will attempt to cross the lake faster than anyone ever has – hoping to break the record set by the Canadian duo Ray Zahab and Kevin Vallely of 13 days, 12 hours.

It will be the most dangerous and challenging adventure either of us have ever been on. To make it a little safer (and to keep our mums happy) Natalie White and I went over to Russia in spring of 2018. How cold could a Siberian winter be?
