Hazy doom duo invite you to tune in and drop out
Suffolk duo Kulk specialise in a distinct style of downbeat, slow-motion fuzz that feels more like heavily sedated grunge than metallic Sabbath worship. The thick, sweaty dirge of tracks like Giallo sound like Mudhoney struggling through the worst hangover of their collective lives while the riffs in songs like A Happy Death have that same thousand-yard-stare effect as bands like Acid King. However, the tortured, strained vocals have more in common with the likes of Toadliquor, keeping the whole thing from ever sounding too joyous or blissed out. This is the kind of thing that feels like it would sound a lot better blaring at you from a wall of amps in some dingy little sweatbox, but it’s a promising start - especially 10-minute closer Fuzz War, which stretches Kulk’s sound beyond breaking point.
