The Dawn Of Vitriol
NOBLE DEMON
Swallow The Sun keyboard player ekes out a new strain of doom
Celebrated Finnish producer Jaani Peuhu, also of Swallow The Sun, unveils new project Mercury Circle with this mini-album. Its unique sound relies heavily on darkwave influences; lush layers of darkling synth and electronica dominate the soundscape, but are occasionally dominated by sudden waves of crushing doom heaviness that permeate the haze in a style he’s labelled ‘new doom’. It’s a bold claim, reflected in the grandeur of Oil Of Vitriol’s martial stomp. It bleeds into The Beauty Of Agony’s sombre ambience, exploding in exultant riffing in the chorus. The Last Fall employs a similar tactic, Peuhu’s breathy vocal delicacy emboldened with huge guitars. Mercury Circle tap into the potent vein of melancholy that runs through Finnish culture, unafraid to rattle doom’s long-established foundations. It culminates to create a mournfully refreshing experience.
