Echoes From Deep November

Former melodeath squad get a murk-laden makeover
This Connecticut quartet evolved out of Archaic Decapitator, but their debut album is a far gloomier affair. The melodic DM influence hasn’t totally disappeared - Elusive Light’s stirring Dark Tranquillity-esque harmonies sit atop a deft mid-paced chug - but Echoes… mostly delves headfirst into deep, sumptuous doom in the vein of early Paradise Lost. Songs like The Lock And The Key build vast, melancholic soundscapes from desolate, detuned guitars and ethereal keys. Reflections In The Ice takes that gothic vibe even further, putting forlorn synth arpeggios upfront as vocalist Kristian Grimaldi exorcises demons with his rich, guttural baritone. A promising start.
