When Gojira played London’s Brixton Academy in June 2019, it felt like a victory lap. They’d already toured sixth album Magma in 2017, and now they were back at bigger venues to do it on a grander scale (including Glastonbury two days before). It didn’t matter that an idiot spilled a pint on the lighting desk, halting the flow of the show and clearly frustrating the band, who nonetheless took the mishap in their stride. The songs sounded earth-shattering. Joe Duplantier’s singing, impassioned. Brother Mario’s drumming, a blur. Guitarist Christian Andreu and bassist Jean-Michel Labadie, creating the riffiest matter in the universe.
Following a US tour culminating in an appearance at Dia De Los Deftones, they basically dropped off the radar until last May, when they streamed footage of their incredible Red Rocks show from three years earlier. Then, in August, they launched a teaser campaign using the hashtags #AnotherPlaceToBe and #ANewPlaceForMe. Could it be… new music on the way?
Gojiraaaaaa!: we’re stupidly excited for their next album
