Less is not more when it comes to Need. Proudly wearing their influences on their sleeve – with a suitably elaborate title to match – their fifth album is an accomplished tribute to metal’s proggiest alumni, from Fates Warning and Evergrey to Dream Theater. Gusty vocals with all the panache of David Coverdale auditioning for Ayreon meet intricate progressive stylistics in dizzying ways on Beckethead, while the choppy noodling of Nemmortal is a subtly chaotic nod to those classic prog metal tropes. For all its widdly, djenty proggisms and dramatic, jagged riffs, Norchestrion… glistens with pristine technicality on the 18-minute Ananke. This is an album for prog nuts, but it’s underpinned by some solid songwriting. ■■■■■■■■■■
