Despite being formed by ex-members of Death and Opeth, Soen specialise in simplified prog metal. Sure, their songs have subgenremandated wonky time signatures, but they obviously care more about condensing the melodic drama of Tool and Dream Theater into accessible fiveminute packages. Imperial is no exception, wowing most with its juicy refrains and occasional bombastic strings. So, if you want your progressive metal to actually be, you know, progressive, this isn’t for you. However, lovers of prior Soen albums, or the grandiose vocals of their genre’s 90s favourites, should leave extremely satisfied. This won’t be a newcomer-wrangling breakthrough, but the band’s ability to make the same formula enrapturing yet again is impressive. ■■■■■■■■■■
