IN SHORT
SOUNDS LIKE: Balls-out, doomy stoner rock with an Icelandic twinkle in its eye
IT’S NOT ALL about the mean streets of Birmingham or the swamps of Louisiana; massive riffs are available pretty much everywhere these days, including the misty, frozen wastes of Iceland. One of the most exuberant and thunderous stoner rock bands to emerge in decades, Volcanova put their homeland firmly on the bongs-plus-riffs map with last year’s debut album, Radical Waves. Iceland has produced plenty of black and post-metal bands in recent times, but these boys are peddling something much more upbeat and joyful.
