NAPALM
The late 90s were rough on the classic doom-death sound. Moving on from its original, deliciously putrid form, extreme metal’s most miserable subgenre was ruined by Theatre Of Tragedy, Sirenia and their ruffled shirts and cheesy synth-sporting army of clones until salvation came from the land of the thousand lakes. This being said, Marianas Rest don’t quite exactly follow their glorious elders Swallow The Sun’s path; they have a rounder and fuller sound with fewer pure doom elements of their own and a soothing electronic edge. But like STS, their third full-length finds the right balance between light and darkness, and between melody and heaviness with uplifting melodies.
