“IMAGINE THAT HUMANS achieve interstellar travel and there’s a space lounge with a house band that’s heavy and alien and scary. We’re that band!” says Black Moon Mother drummer Jeff Ehlinger with a laugh.
It’s an apt image for the Nashville-based quintet, whose full-length debut, Illusions Under The Sun, synthesises a dizzying range of styles into a wild, ethereal headtrip. Founder/vocalist Brianne O’Neill says, “For people new to the scene, I’d say we’re dark, heavy rock with angelic vocals. But for those familiar with genres, I’d say we’re a mix of psychedelic rock, shoegaze, doom and heavy metal.” Genre classifications aside, Illusions Under The Sun is a rapturous collection of cosmic bangers that open realms of consciousness well beyond the mind’s ordinary operating frequencies.
Indeed, they take their name from the occurrence of a second new moon within a single calendar month –a phenomenon rife with pagan connotations. “I’m very drawn to the heavy and darker side of life,” says Brianne. “It can be a healthy way to process anger and sadness, just feeling the growl of the guitar in my body and letting the darkness transmute through the music.”
